Selun® : qualities and properties
Selun® exhibits the natural properties of wood while being also thermoformable.
100% bio-based: Selun® is made from wood flour and cellulose acetate. The cellulose acetate is a bio-based polymer (non-petroleum-based polymer) stemming from cellulose (extracted from cotton, wood pulp or paper) and acetylated.
Selun® does not emit any toxic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as formaldehyde. The use of cellulose acetate which is a thermoplastic material, gives to Selun® its recyclability. The thermoformability that allows to transform boards (2D shape) into volumes (3D shape) by a simple heating and compression in a mould, is also obtained thanks to the thermoplasticity of cellulose acetate. As machinable as wood with conventional wood tools, the thermoforming allows a greater freedom in volume for designers.
Selun® exhibits similar mechanical properties (flexural strength, tensile impact) to those of a MDF, Selu® can be conventionally assembling (screwing, etc) or by welding or by bonding using a bio-based glue from cellulose acetate. Selun® can be used raw, varnished, painted, lacquered using traditional products or with paints, varnishes or lacquers based on cellulose acetate. It can also be covered with a thermoformed wood veneer.
Selun® was born of Compo’line project financed by ERDF, the french state and Lower Normandy par le FEDER.
Mechanical properties : Selun® gets mechanical properties (flexural and tensile strengths and impact properties) similar to those of a MDF.
